How to Make a Musical Instrument Angklung

Angklung is a musical instrument multitonal (dual tone) that is traditionally grown in Sundanese people in the western part of Java Island. This musical instrument made of bamboo, rung by shaken (noise caused by the impact of a bamboo pipe body) resulting in a sound that vibrates in the composition of tones 2, 3 to 4 tones in every size, both large and small. Dictionary of the Sunda Language by Jonathan Rigg, published in 1862 in Batavia, wrote that Angklung is a musical instrument made of pipes of bamboo, cut edges, resembling the pipes in an organ, and tied together in a frame, vibrated to produce sound. Angklung is listed as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since November 2010.

Here are the steps to make angklung musical instrument:

1. Selection Process Materials Bamboo Good
Bamboo is the raw material of the Angklung. Selected based on age that is at least 4 years and not more than 6 years and cut in the dry season from 9 am until 3 o'clock in the afternoon. After cutting the base of bamboo trees, with a size of approximately 2-3 jengkaldari ground level, the bamboo must be stored for about 1 week, so bamboo benar2 not contain water.

After a week, the bamboo must be separated from its branches. And cut into a certain size range. Then, the bamboo must be stored for about a year to prevent pests. Some procedures are: by soaking bamboo in a mud puddle, pond or river, also can be smoked in the fireplace (diunun), and modern procedures: using certain chemical liquid formula.

2. Section Bamboo material used to make Angklung

 Angklung consists of 3 parts:
1. Tube Sound
The most important part of an Angklung, is a sound tube that generates intonation. Setem process can produce intonation.

2. Framework
Framework for the tube to stand in place.

3. Basic
Serves as a voice tube frame.

3. Tuning Process

Voice tube formation
It is the process of forming the blade of bamboo into the sound tube.

Tuning process
It is the process of blowing the bottom of the tube angklung and equalize the sound to the instrument tuner.

The main process of tuning
It is the process of tuning the sound by raising and lowering the tone by sounding tone. And this is also the process raise the tone by cutting the top slightly, and lowered the tone by menyerut both sides of the tube with a knife blade.

How to use the Tuner:
To use the tuner, we must pay attention to both of the lights on the left and right of the panel, and also the pointer.

For example, if you are going to make a pitch "F", you have to shake the angklung while paying attention both from the lamp will light up simultaneously, and for the needle which will show the number "F".

4. Final Stage

After each voice has a tone tube, the tube must be placed into the frame and tied with rattan rope.

5. Maintenance

Tune / Men-stem Angklung

If the Angklung sound becomes higher, the leaves should Angklung (side A) with a knife sharpened expression little by little until it reaches the desired sound.

If the sound of Angklung be lower, should end Angklung (side B) cut little by little so that his voice became normal again.

Storage and Maintenance Angklung

To be understood that the Angklung made of bamboo materials, construction or strength is not like metal, so it needs maintenance and good storage. Angklung is either made of bamboo which has passed quality control process either. Long bamboo storage before being processed into Angklung must be at least one year old. Bamboo drying process function so that Angklung made to produce the right sound / loud and less susceptible to pest. Angklung age when good maintenance can reach 10 years.

Here are the steps that can be taken to maintain instrument Angklung:

So Angklung arrive in a new place, immediately open and hang on the gallows standards that have been provided. Storage in a cardboard / closed place more than 7 days can lead to changes in the sound and the mushrooming of bamboo.

Angklung storage should be by hanging, not stacked.
Angklung storage should be in a dry and not humid with temperatures ranging from 25-33 C.

Do not store in the open Angklung that get sun / rain directly.
To maintain Angklung of penjamuran and termites, use of anti termite and fungal production SAU regularly two weeks with the spraying process.

To maintain the quality of voice do the tuning / re-tuning Angklung periodically.

For Angklung stored in a hot area with air temperature> 30 C sometimes causes a slight crack on the base of the tube. It is unobtrusive sound, and treatment given enough wood glue. (Source: Angklung Ujo)
